MEDICA is the most iconic international trade fair for the medical supply industry in the world. Held on September 18-21, MEDICA 2019 had attracted as many as 120,000 visitors from all over the world, including more than 70 countries and 6,000 manufacturers to participate, as well as experts from more than 120 countries to visit. Undoubtedly, the exhibition contents of MEDICA are indicators for the future trends of the medical supply industry.
GLORIA NCKU participated in MEDICA 2019 along with the products and technologies of NCKU’s professors and GLORIA team members. Besides showcasing their research results, the international fair can also stimulate the innovative thinking of R&D personnel and be very helpful in renovating and developing future products.
A total of more than 200 manufacturers from Taiwan participated in the fair this time. The Manager of GLORIA NCKU also took the opportunity to visit the manufacturers and introduce the organization and services of GLORIA NCKU. Many of NCKU’s alumni and manufacturers were positive towards the act that academic institutes participated in international trade fairs.
The team included Professor Han-Sheng Chuang and Professor Hsien-Chang Chang from the Department of Biomedical Engineering, NCKU. Ficuson and Riche are both startup company from NCKU.
The “Liquid Qinetics” demonstrated by Professor Han-Sheng Chuang uses the principle of Brownian motion, capable of obtaining the drug sensitivity test results in a short time. It is more time-saving compared to the previous method, enabling doctors to provide patients with accurate medication and concentration.
Professor Hsien-Chang Chang showed two technologies at the fair, one of which was the speedy “Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (AST)” that uses microscopic bacterial image analysis technology to determine the resistance of bacteria, which has a significantly shorter detection time as compared with the traditional turbidity detection method. Another technology he introduced was “LAMP’s nucleic acid amplification technology,” which can rapidly detect the infection of dengue fever and can immediately distinguish the serotype of dengue infection.
Ficuson is a company spin off from school. It revealed its self-developed analyzer in the fair, which can automatically measure the degree of carotid sclerosis, and hope to achieve early prevention and achieve medical classification. The product can be used in medical inspection, home care, and other fields in the future.
Another startup, Riche, showed the “photonic PCR” in the fair. In that event, many visitors expressed their interest in the technology displayed by NCKU and got in touch with them, hoping for follow-up cooperation.
The fair has allowed GLORIA team to understand the needs of domestic medical supply manufacturers and to formulate solutions to meet the demands, thereby promoting the medical supply industry and maximizing the mission of GLORIA.
